"The last few days of summer have arrived and as a perfect bridge between the warm summer nights and the cozier autumn evenings, Maps & Transit offer us a beautiful album filled with sunlight and nostalgia.

On ' songs for divining ' Kyle Dawkins & Julie Phillips masterly concocted an evoking sense of travelling. From track to track, their american folk and experimental electronica bring us from the 50s south-american bayoos to simple, fragile polaroids of obscure forests."

Happy downloading!

Songs for Divining will be released Sept. 17 on Montreal's Camomille Music

This is a free gift from us to you! This is also a prelude of things to come.

Our dear Camomille friends up north have recently cooked up a super gorgeous sister label called Les Enregstrements Variables and we're honored to be invited on board! The label is still in the beginning tendril stage but from what I've heard so far, Vince
is putting together an amazing cadre of auditory wizards who can pull beauty out of thin air. Coming down the pipe from EV soon are releases that are well worth checking out.

New music for Les Enregistrements Variables. New directions. New digs. Ideas in the beehive.

"Download, Don’t Think: Maps and Transit, a duo populated by Kyle Dawkins and Julie Phillips, has its track “Sacred Harp” featured on the new compilation Hope’s Not Lost from Montreal's Camomille Music. The pair’s track has almost a full minute of silence and near-silence before it begins with Dawkins’ (who has a couple of solo albums of his own and is a member of the Georgia Guitar Quartet) guitar and Phillips’ xylophone. And it’s shockingly gorgeous. Actually, the entire comp is beautiful and thought-provoking, and if there’s any record (OK, download) that’s necessary this week, it’s this one. For more information, please see www.mapsandtransit.com and to download the music and cover art head to

Our new track "Sacred Harp" is available for download on "Hope's not lost", the new release from Montreal label Camomille Music. We're really honored to be featured on this incredibly beautiful and inspiring collection of songs. Many thanks to my good friend Vincent Fugere for asking us to take part. Check out his amazing music and graphic design work.

Yes, we still are tying up loose ends on the record. Life took over and things kind of got put on the backburner but alas, we're still pressing forward at our own pace. Right now it's in the mastered stage and we're really psyched about the sound. Thanks to Brian Smith for his excellent help in this subtle stage.

After that, it's replication and packaging time. In the meantime, you can still download some free tracks HERE. More to come.

Thanks for the inquiries and the patience!

Songs For Divining - early 2010

We have a new album coming out! A few details:

Songs for Divining has been in the slow cooker now for the better part of three years. Originally I planned to release it as a solo album under my own name (Kyle Dawkins for those who are new to this site) on the now defunct Montreal label Apegenine Recordings.

After the label closed it's doors, I took some time to consider what to do with the music. After taking a few years to tinker with the songs on and off, both in live settings and in our living room, I began to realize that the songs were taking shape in a way that felt very different from much of my earlier solo material. Not satisfied with letting the songs petrify on my hard drive, I decided to start a new band as a format for the music. Songs for Divining became the main impetus to form Maps and Transit and "transition", as it were, into a new phase.

Figuring out how to play the songs live proved to be a challenge that left me scratching my head for the last year or two. After trying out several live permutations by myself, I quickly discovered that the songs were completely unmanageable to perform as a solo act. I enlisted the help of my wife Julie to juggle bass and percussion and to help out with some live mixing/second opinions. Friends in town also helped out with some of our shows and things finally started to take shape.

So now we're here at the end of 09 with a few shows under our belt and an album
that we're both glad to finally see the light of day. We're in the process of tying up a few loose ends but keep watching this page for updates, more info on the songs themselves and further info on our collaborations with Athens artist Chris Wyrick who has been a great friend through the whole process and has gone out of his way to make our shows look awesome with his projected water/light setup.

In the meantime you can preview/download some tracks from the album HERE

Thanks so much to all who have been coming to our shows!

Just a heads up about a few upcoming performances both with
the full band and also as a duo. One in particular that we're really
excited about is a performance in conjunction with MERCURY ARTWORKS
at Athens' first sustainable "luxury boutique hotel," HOTEL INDIGO.

Also, we're doing a short set at the intimate and very special FLOORSPACE on Sept 25th.

Also, keep checking this space for info regarding our upcoming release
SONGS FOR DIVINING
